Chiropractic and Surgery

Chiropractic and Surgery:

We all know someone who’s undergone a surgery for some part of their body that has broken down. Hips, knees, shoulders, and the back. These are the areas that we come across the most in regards to Chiropractic patients. Either they have already gone under the knife, or they are considering it to deal with their pain. That can also be going in for surgery…again. Often times we do not get to see a patient for a particular condition until after they have already gone the route of medication then surgery. And also, often times it is not uncommon to hear one of these patients say, “I wish I had seen you before I had surgery.”

Chiropractors can keep patients out of surgery, which not only is of benefit to the patient’s physical health, but also a big help to the old pocketbook. In 2011 Medicare found that one such surgery, a spinal fusion surgery, has shown an increase over the previous 10 years of over 450%! Not only this, but also shown that many times the surgery was unnecessary in the first place. Total incorrect billing for these types of surgeries in this year totaled over $180 million. And here’s where it all ties in: why did they find that these surgeries were “unnecessary”? Because a less invasive conservative therapy – hint: chiropractic – was not performed first.

We are continuing to see again and again that what we’ve been told for the past few decades regarding medical care is not always the best route for the patient. The days of going to the doctor’s office, getting an MRI, then doing surgery are long gone. These days it’s very difficult to order an MRI without going through a pre-authorization process to ensure it is medically necessary. This also means that going straight into surgery is much less common, especially when there is a much cheaper and less invasive option like Chiropractic that might keep you out of surgery altogether. If you would like more information regarding how a Chiropractor may help you keep out of surgery, please call our Tigard Chiropractic office at 503-206-4620 and schedule a free 15 minute consultation. -Dr. J
