The Chiropractic neck adjustment: how it works and its effects

So just what do a chiropractic adjustment to the neck do? We know that there’s a loud crunch, and often patients are in one of two groups: either they cannot wait for the crunch, or they are scared stiff of it. Although not all chiropractors neck adjustments involve the popping, in fact there are several techniques which involve low force or no click/pop at all, they are all aiming at the same thing: to affect the joints and the nervous system of the body.

There is still a lot of controversy involving the chiropractic neck pain adjustment, especially in regards to the studies that are out for it, but regardless of the exact way that it relieves neck pain we do know for certain (and studies have shown this): chiropractors adjustment of the neck really helps with neck pain.

Without getting too in-depth into the neurology of how it works, here’s the most well-known effects of the chiropractic neck adjustment:

Release of endorphins: when the joint is popped its called a cavitation, and the cracking sound is the release of gas bubbles in the joint fluid due to pressure change. This is often why you see so many people cracking their own necks – they like the feeling 🙂

Resetting local nerves of the nervous system: restoring proper motion to a neck’s joint complex will increase the neck’s range of motion. This in turn gives your neck a new set of “out of bounds” so it is able to move through more motions with less pain.
Decreases irritation of nerves: restoring proper motion allows the small nerves around the spine to move more freely and thereby less pain.

Decreases local muscle tightness and spasm in the neck and shoulder regions
